Tom Hanks is coming back to Broadway.<\/p>\n

Hanks is returning to the Great White Way, set to star in his own play This World of Tomorrow<\/em>. Hanks will act alongside Kelli O\u2019Hara, known for her TV roles in The Gilded Age<\/em> and Sheriff Country<\/em>, in a limited engagement\u00a0beginning next fall. The official show dates have yet to be announced.<\/p>\n

The play follows scientist Bert Allenberry, played by the Forrest Gump<\/em> star, as he embarks on a time-traveling journey and falls in love with a woman named Carmen, played by O\u2019Hara, at the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, New York. Co-written by James Glossman and Hanks, the plot is based on a series of short stories written by Hanks in the book Uncommon Type.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hanks and O\u2019Hara originated their roles during the show\u2019s off-Broadway run during an eight-week engagement in 2025.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been 13 years since Hanks appeared on Broadway, last starring in Nora Ephron’s play Lucky Guy<\/em> back in 2013. Although Hanks has quite the filmography, the Tony Award-nominated actor has a\u00a0special appreciation for live performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the single best thing about the theatre: every day, every night, every performance \u2026 You start at the beginning and you work all the way through to the end,\u201d he told Playbill<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in an interview published Nov. 11, 2025. \u201cSo the theoretical disappears, and it’s actually the reality of what happens at that moment on the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n
