(Photo by Gareth Cattermole\/Getty Images for BFI)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Greta Gerwig is sharing some insight into her upcoming <em>Chronicles of Narnia<\/em> adaptation, <em>Narnia: The Magician\u2019s Nephew.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a new cover story with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/narnia-magicians-nephew-aslan-meryl-streep-cover-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Empire<\/em><\/a>, the writer\/director explains why she cast Meryl Streep to voice Aslan, the mythical lion and creator of the Narnia world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted someone who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness. Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight,\u201d Gerwig tells <em>Empire<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She adds, \u201cI wanted someone who was older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child. And also to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. That list is not a long one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/narnia-magicians-nephew-greta-gerwig-rock-opera-fantasy-bowie-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tells the mag<\/a> that she wanted her adaptation to have the feel of a rock opera, inspired by the feeling she got listening to music by David Bowie, Paul McCartney and others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNarnia is literally a world made out of music,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is a world sung to life by Aslan, and rock \u2019n\u2019 roll to me felt like a world made out of music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Narnia: The Magician\u2019s Nephew<\/em> hits theaters Feb. 12, 2027, and Netflix on April 2, 2027. In addition to Streep, it stars newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and Daniel Craig.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2026, ABC Audio.
